Keeping sustainable landholders on sustainable land

Accreditation

Landcare Australia’s CarbonSMART is the first accredited carbon credits program from a not-for-profit to support biodiversity, having been formally accredited to trade carbon under the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme (GGAS).

CarbonSMART uses carbon sequestration accounting systems consistent with the Kyoto Protocol and the Australian Government, and is monitored by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of NSW (IPART).

CarbonSMART is also proudly supported by Westpac, Freehills, Elders and Kraft.

CarbonSMART projects and plantings are monitored at least once every five years to ensure consistency with project expectations and carbon sequestration rates (including any depletion, for example through bush fire, which may need replanting or fencing). CarbonSMART uses this approach to ensure that the expected increase in price for NGACs is passed onto the landholder. This method also ensures that landholders are paid if their site stores more carbon than estimated.

CarbonSMART’s online emissions calculator also uses the Department of Climate Change (DCC) factors and methods workbook, not averages, to calculate accurate emissions totals, making it one of the most rigorous in the market place.

As such, you can be assured that should you purchase carbon credits through Landcare CarbonSMART, you are supporting a highly scrutinised and monitored project backed by Australia’s largest environmental movement.
